Weather API MCP Server is an MCP server that connects LLM clients to the QWeather (和风天气) API to retrieve real-time weather reports, extended forecasts, hourly predictions, and geographical lookup data. Designed for developers and AI assistant users who require up-to-date meteorological information within chat interfaces, the server provides direct access to environmental metrics across global locations. Through standard Model Context Protocol tools, users can query current temperatures, humidity levels, wind speeds, atmospheric pressure, and visibility metrics for cities, specific coordinates, or QWeather location codes. It also facilitates retrieving 24-hour hourly projections along with daily forecasts spanning from 3 to 30 days, complete with sunrise, sunset, and moon phase data. The server enables automated location resolution using a dedicated city lookup tool, allowing users to discover specific location identifiers for more accurate weather tracking. Configurable options include measurement unit toggles between metric and imperial scales, multi-language support covering English, Chinese, and Japanese, and fine-tuned detail levels.

npm install mcp-weather-api or run it dynamically with npx. 2. Obtain an API key from the QWeather developer platform. 3. Open your MCP client configuration file (for example, claude_desktop_config.json for Claude Desktop). 4. Register the server in your mcpServers object: json { "mcpServers": { "weather": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "mcp-weather-api"], "env": { "QWEATHER_API_KEY": "your-api-key" } } } } 5. Save the configuration and restart your client to use the weather tools.Part of MCP Servers
Weather API MCP Server provides four main tools to fetch current weather conditions, 24-hour hourly forecasts, 3- to 30-day extended daily forecasts, and city lookup details. It surfaces meteorological data such as temperature, feels-like temperature, humidity, wind speed, pressure, visibility, cloud cover, and sunrise or sunset times directly to supported MCP assistants.
You can install the server via npm using npm install mcp-weather-api or run it directly using npx. In your MCP client configuration file, add an entry under mcpServers specifying npx as the command and -y mcp-weather-api as the arguments, along with your QWeather API credentials in the environment variables.
Weather API MCP Server works with any client that implements the standard Model Context Protocol. This includes AI desktop clients like Claude Desktop, developer environments like Cursor, and other custom agent platforms configured to run local MCP servers via standard input and output.
The server supports three location formats: standard city names such as London or Beijing, geographic coordinates specified as longitude, latitude (for example 119.98,30.24), and official QWeather location ID codes obtained via the city lookup tool.
The server integrates with the QWeather API. While an initial demo key is bundled for evaluation purposes, production usage requires setting the QWEATHER_API_KEY environment variable with a personal key obtained from the QWeather developer portal.
