MCP-ABI

MCP-ABI is an MCP server that enables AI agents to interact with Ethereum-compatible smart contracts using their Application Binary Interface (ABI). Built on Viem and the Model Context Protocol, the server dynamically generates MCP tools at runtime based on any provided contract ABI. It connects LLM interfaces directly to EVM blockchains through configurable RPC endpoints. Web3 developers, smart contract auditors, and decentralized application builders use this server to read on-chain contract state and execute state-changing transactions directly through conversational models like Claude. For read-only actions, such as checking token balances or viewing allowances, the server queries view and pure functions without gas costs. For write functions, such as token transfers or approvals, it utilizes a configured private key to sign and submit transactions to the network. Each function defined in the contract ABI maps automatically to an individual MCP tool, providing type-safe interaction without requiring custom wrapper code.

How to install and configure MCP-ABI

  1. Run the server directly using npx via @iqai/mcp-abi, or clone the repository using git clone https://github.com/IQAIcom/mcp-abi.git, install dependencies with pnpm install, and build using pnpm run build. 2. Open your MCP client configuration file, such as claude_desktop_config.json. 3. Add a new server entry under mcpServers pointing to npx with args ["-y", "@iqai/mcp-abi"] or node pointing to your build's dist/index.js. 4. Define the required environment variables: CONTRACT_ABI containing the JSON string of the ABI, and CONTRACT_ADDRESS with the deployed contract address. 5. Optionally set CONTRACT_NAME, RPC_URL, CHAIN_ID, and WALLET_PRIVATE_KEY (required if executing write transactions). 6. Restart your MCP client to load the dynamically generated contract tools.

What you can do with MCP-ABI

  • Querying ERC-20 and ERC-721 token balances, allowances, and total supply metrics directly through conversational prompts without gas costs. - Executing on-chain write transactions such as token transfers or spending approvals using a configured private key for automated interactions. - Inspecting deployed contract interfaces by asking the model to list all available read and write functions alongside required parameters. - Interacting with decentralized finance protocols across custom EVM-compatible networks by configuring custom RPC endpoints and chain IDs.

How do I install MCP-ABI?

You can run MCP-ABI without a manual global installation by executing npx @iqai/mcp-abi inside your client configuration. Alternatively, you can clone the repository from GitHub, run pnpm install, and build the project with pnpm run build to reference the compiled index.js file directly with Node.

What can MCP-ABI do?

MCP-ABI automatically parses a smart contract ABI and generates individual MCP tools for every function. It allows AI models to call read-only view functions to inspect state, as well as execute signed write transactions on EVM blockchains when provided with a valid wallet private key.

Which MCP clients work with MCP-ABI?

MCP-ABI works with any client that implements the Model Context Protocol, including Claude Desktop. You configure it by adding the command and necessary environment variables like the contract ABI and address to the client configuration file.

Is MCP-ABI open source?

Yes, MCP-ABI is open-source software distributed under the ISC license. The source code, build scripts, and development guidelines are publicly hosted on GitHub by IQAIcom.
